The Summer and Reading and …

The book of the week, for reflective and challenging reading is: “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult.

Jodi Picoult is a prolific writer with a gift for projecting a common theme into a contemporary scene, with ethical and conflicting issues confronting the characters.

People of all ages and stage of life will find be edified with the reading of this dramatic story. There are many separate and interleaved issues and story lines in the narrative.

For example,

1.      A story of a family coping with a young child with a critical medical diagnosis.

2.      A story of a decision to have another child that could be an organ donor for the other child.

3.      A story of the love and empathy that is shown to both daughters.

4.      A story of conflict and jealousy among the siblings.

5.      A story of conflict between the parents as the medical issues pile up.

6.      A story of legal tangles as one daughter raises her voice for her life.

7.      A story of anger and suicidal attempts by folks under stress.

8.      A story of unrequited love by people involved in the courtroom drama.

9.      A story of the challenges and promises of biomedical breakthroughs.

This is a piece of fiction that has an origin in a real life situation – prompted by the medical debates and the consequent ethical dilemmas manifest in the story.
