The Annual Town Election

Our town charter calls for the annual town election to be held on the first Saturday in June. This is not a deep secret; this is tradition and the norm for many years.

On Saturday, June 4th, 2005, approximately 15% of the registered voters in town took the time and made the effort to go to their designated polling places and cast their carefully considered votes.

What this means is that 85% of the registered voters ignored the opportunity to participate in the annual event whereby the town chooses the people who will have the authority to manage the affairs of the town.

What’s happening that so few of the voters came to the polls to vote?

What’s behind this near apathy or pure disdain for the process?

Is the entire electorate very comfortable and content with the status of the town?

Are there no viable or ambitious folks around who are willing to compete with debate and discussion and spirited campaigning to bring out the voters?

Are there no salient issues confronting the town whereby the voters need to step up and let their voices be heard?

What is the reason behind this ignominious showing of a minority of voters deciding the future leadership ion our town?
