Highlighting News Stories for Our Town for the week of April 3, 2002

Previous Newsbreak Archive

Time moves us on. The year is now one quarter over.

Our annual rite of spring, the town meeting, will take place a month from now. Further, the annual town election will be held on the first Saturday of June.

Candidates for office need to file nomination papers by April 12, a week from this Friday.

What are the pressing issues this year?

1.              The struggle to maintain a balanced budget with increased need for services and a diminished amount of state aid will continue as in other years.

2.              The Board of Health has issued a regulation that will prohibit smoking in any and all bars and restaurants effective in June.

3.              There will be two new members on the school committee after the election. Long time member Gary Dalton passed away last month and Mary Kent has announced that she will not be a candidate for reelection.

4.              With the new precinct, every town meeting member must run for reelection.

Thus, there are some recurring issues around funding and some changes in the membership of our town offices.

Finally, we remind everyone that this weekend is the time to move the clocks ahead one hour.

And, the Boston Marathon is just around the corner, also.
