Newsbreak for Walpole

The Week – August 4
The Year – 2003

What’s for Lunch?

Walpole is known for many things. It’s been described as the ‘friendly’ town. A maximum-security facility is located at one edge of town.

Our public schools rate with the best in the state. Our young athletes garner accolades year after year.

And, as the slower days of summer continue, we would like to note just how many choices there are when folks ask that question – Where shall we go for lunch?

1. Lets’ just look at the stretch of town along route 1A from the Bristol square mall to the Super Stop and Shop on route 1A heading toward Norwood.

2. This is exactly two miles as you drive from the mall to the supermarket.

3. At the mall, there is a popular café with room for folks to sit and relax or order takeout. Nearby there are two separate shops offering sandwiches and/or pizza.

4. Heading into the downtown area, there is a popular sandwich shop near the bank and another sandwich shop about to open. At the intersection of 1a and 27, heading out of town, there is a bakery offering sandwiches and soup.

5. Continue on 1A and you note the CVS parking lot. There you can have lunch at a sit down restaurant, go to another sandwich shop, or consider Chinese food next door.

6. Then, head out again toward Norwood. At the Ashmont Plaza, there are more choices. In addition to two coffee and doughnut shops, there is another sit down restaurant, another option for Chinese food, and another sandwich shop.

7. Finally, continue on to the supermarket, just before the market, there is a fast-food drive up.

8. Now, as you head into the supermarket itself, you more choices inside.

9. There is another coffee and doughnut option; there is the salad bar; and there is an option for buying sandwiches and a la Carte dinners.

In summary, over this short two-mile stretch of road, from one edge of town through downtown to another edge, we encounter many options for sandwiches and pizza and coffee and muffins and several choices for sitting down for a casual lunch.

Where to go for lunch is a great question with many options.

All in all, I count about 17 separate and distinct choices for lunch in this short 2-mile road in the downtown area.
