Week of Aug. 26
The Year
2002
Labor Day
Weekend
It’s nearly
100 years since a small labor union in New York proposed a holiday
in September to celebrate the value of work and the worth of the
labor movement.
Now, the
first Monday in September is recognized as a national, legal
holiday.
Yet, it is
also the traditional end of summer weekend and many people flock
to their last recreational outing and travel far and near to soak
up one last weekend before the rigors of the fall set in.
In fact, on
Wednesday, Sept. 4th, children will give in to the
school bells ringing and head off to another academic year.
Board of Selectmen
We announced
last week that Alan Rockwood, chair of the board of selectmen, was
stepping down from that position – but remaining on the board.
Alan has
written to the board and to the town that he has been diagnosed
with cancer and will be putting all his effort into fighting this
disease.
We offer
Alan and his family all of our support and prayers and good wishes
for his strength under adversity.
School Construction
It seems
that the construction at the high school has been going on for a
long time. In fact, the project is about eight months late –
considering the original time estimates.
The good
news is that the final result will be a renovated and expanded
high school that will provide the school community with a fine
facility.
And, with
the advent of this new school year, construction has started on
the project to provide additional classroom space at the Elm
Street school and the Boyden school.
Good luck to
all as this academic year 2002/2003 begins.
