Week of Aug. 5
The Year 2002
Parking Woes and Parking Relief
Looking for a parking space can be a problem at certain times of
the day. This is especially true during the week when you have
just a few minutes to stop, run an errand, and continue on with
your busy day.
Parallel parking on Main Street in the central business district
is scarce at best. And, turning off Main street to the off street
parking at Stone street is time consuming and problematic.
Well, after a few years of discussion and negotiations and hard
work, a new off street parking area is underway.
Here are the details.
1. Glenwood Avenue, Main Street and East Street bound the area of
this parking lot. That is, coming along Main Street, you would
turn down Glenwood toward East Street.
2. The parking spaces would be available in an area to the rear of
the Fleet bank and continuing down to an area across from
Finnegan’s Wake Restaurant.
3. There will be an exit from the parking area out to Main Street.
4. This parking lot will not satisfy the needs for all the parking
demand at peak times, but will be an improvement to the existing
situation.
5. An intangible aspect to this project is that the area off
Glenwood Avenue will be noticeably improved in terms of visibility
and beauty.
And, as the summer drifts off to welcome the fall, the Selectmen
will be looking at some unfinished business.
1. The project to provide more playing fields to the rear of the
high school is yet to be resolved.
2. The project to consider the cleanup of environmentally
contaminated land off Route 1a near Norfolk is still under
consideration.
3. The traffic congestion issues around the intersection off East
Street heading toward Route 1 continue unresolved.
4. The Washington Street Bridge in East Street is yet to be fixed.
