We bring you two stories this week. Both of them are critical to the environment here in our town.

First, notice what the new regulation just passed by the Board of Health might mean to citizens and to restaurant and pub owners.

1. The new regulation, taking effect in June, will prohibit smoking in bars and restaurants in any area of the establishment. This is a substantial change from the current regulation that separates smoking from non-smoking sections.

2. The intent of the board of health is to provide a healthy environment in our town, especially when it comes to clean air in public locations.

3. The owners of restaurants are concerned that customers who want to smoke will take their business elsewhere.

4. So, the new regulation will promise a cleaner air space in eating establishments. But, at what price to the business climate?

In three short weeks, the town will hold a special recall election. The election will take place on the third Saturday of March - the 16th.

The election asks the voters quite simply to consider whether or not four selectmen should be recalled.

This recall election was initiated at the end of the sequence of events that occurred over last year as the general override was voted on in two different occasions.

Considering the responsibilities of the board of selectmen, it seems very important that every voter in town make an effort to participate in this election, regardless of their point of view. Every vote is important.

……..

And, remember that the polling places have changed.

Voters in precincts 1 –5 will go to the high school to vote while those in precincts 6, 7, and 8 will vote at the Fisher School.

Important issues are facing our town.
