The year 2002 in
Walpole will be one marked by more changes in our political system
than ever before.
Last week, we explained the changes taking place with an
additional precinct for local representation. Further, the state
legislature redrew district lines such that there will now be four
different state representatives for Walpole – each of these
representing a piece of the town.
Now, we see a change in the way we will be voting in local and
state and federal elections.
Let’s look.
1. In the past, on any election day in town, voters would go to a
particular polling place to vote based upon their precinct. The
different polling places were set up in five different
geographical areas in town to facilitate the process of getting to
the polls to vote.
2. Thus, voters in precinct 1 in East Walpole went to the parish
center on Washington Street. Voters in precinct 2 went to the OPR
School. Voters in precinct 4 in South Walpole went to the Boyden
School. Voters in Precincts 3 & 5 went to the senior center at the
Town Hall. And, voters in precincts 6 & 7 went to the Fisher
School.
3. All this is now to change.
4. There will now be just two polling places. Voters from
precincts 1 – 5 will go to the High School gymnasium and voters in
precincts 6, 7, & 8 will go to the Fisher School.
Let’s review.
1. We now have divided the town into 8 precincts rather than 7.
2. Depending upon your precinct, your state representative will be
one of four people who live outside of Walpole.
3. And, depending upon your precinct, you will vote in either the
High School or the Fisher School.
There will be time to absorb all this since the next anticipated
election will be in June. However, should you wish to contact your
state representative on a matter, you need to figure out which of
the four state reps will be serving your precinct.
Change is coming.
