Unfinished Business
Town Administrator, Michael Boynton, faces a large task this year,
beginning with the budget message to be issued later this month.
And, there are a host of old items sitting in the list of
unfinished business that await his scrutiny. One such item has
been in his sight already.
Let’s look ourselves.
1. In East
Walpole, traveling down Washington Street, you head toward Norwood
and see a strange sign on the right side of the road.
The sign warns pedestrians about walking along the sidewalk, since
the bridge underneath that area of Washington Street is considered
to be unsafe.
Yet, there is no prohibition about vehicular traffic continuing
along the road itself.
2. The town has been looking at this problem for some time and has
not been clear about the right solution.
3. The state has indicated that the bridge underneath Washington
Street is in poor condition and deteriorating day in and day out.
4. A problem that has hindered the solution is the determination
of responsibility. Is it the town’s problem or the state’s or that
of the owner of the bridge?
5. Regardless of who owns the problem, it appears that the bridge
repair needs to be done.
6. The issues of pedestrian and vehicular safety are paramount.
We applaud our new town administrator for picking up this item on
the unfinished business list and giving it some priority.
On the new business list, we await the process whereby the town
will replace our valued Finance Director, Dave Davison, who is
leaving this month.
There is much to do in this year of the palindrome.
