Highlighting News Stories for Our Town for the week of January 28, 2002

Previous Newsbreak Archive

The Year of the Palindrome turns to the Year of the Patriots.

What’s happening in Walpole this week?

The town administrator is preparing the annual budget message; the school system is looking for a new superintendent of schools; the town is looking for a new director of finance; and the project to cap the landfill with material excavated from the construction of new ball fields remains stalled.

BUT……..

The story everyone is talking about is the near fantasy ending for the New England Patriots football team.

Let’s look.

1.              Last year, the Patriots had an undistinguished, nay, lousy season.

2.              This year, the team lost its first two games and their all-star quarterback was injured and spent the next several days in the hospital.

3.              For the rest of the season, the Patriots played with a quarterback who had not played a full NFL game before.

4.              Yet, this team is going to be playing in the final game in New Orleans contending for top honors in football this year.

5.              Yes, this is Super Bowl Sunday this weekend and our New England Patriots share the honor with the St. Louis Rams.

6.              Politics and sports share the stage this week.

We bid January farewell , rejoice in the weekend festivities, and look ahead to the political contest starting in February.
