Summer Reading
Students are
eager to close down their books and put away the notebooks and say
good-bye to this school year. Yes, school ends next week for all
our public school students in Walpole.
But, fear
not, teachers and administrators are encouraging the students and
their parents to continue the educational process over the summer
via the now traditional ‘Summer Reading’ program.
Let’s look
at some of the salient features of the program.
1.
The program is important and should not be shunted aside.
Students will be tested during the first week of classes in
September and that test will count for 10% of the
grade for the first term.
2.
In the English portion of the program, students will select
one book from a list of five and report on that book.
3.
Students in honors classes in English will be required to
read a particular book – again selected from that same list of
five.
4.
The books on the reading list will be available in the
Walpole Public Library and at local bookstores.
5.
Students are encouraged to take notes on their reading to
prepare for the test to be given when they return to class.
6.
There is a significant difference in the testing procedure
from other years. Rather than having students write up an essay on
their reading to be turned in when classes resume in September,
students this year will be tested during the first week of classes
on the reading. This is why the note taking will be very
important.
Thus, as
classes finish up, students will be given the ‘Summer Reading’
program and encouraged to use this vacation wisely.
