Congratulations……

There were two significant events occurring last Saturday. The Walpole High School Girls basketball team played their last game of the year at the Worcester Centrum, winning easily and capturing the state title for Division II.

This was the culmination of a stellar season and worthy of our congratulations again for a great season.

And, after weeks and weeks of debate and discussion, the special recall election was held. The new polling and precinct system procedures went smoothly and about 50% of the registered voters turned out to vote.

The word here is also – Congratulations – to the four selectmen who remain in office as the recall question for the four individuals was defeated.

However, the numbers bear some scrutiny and analysis.

1.              The margin of victory for each selectmen on the recall ballot was different.

2.              The margin of victory thus was as follows: Rockwood 58%; Ryan 56%;Hill 54%; and Conroy 52%.

3.              Thus, there was a very definitive indication of popular support for all the selectmen – but varying in the degree for each.

4.              Thus, we maintain our present leadership in the light of a very contentious campaign.

5.              Now, the next few weeks will see the board address the warrant for the annual town meeting in May.

6.              The budget crunch still exists. The list of projects to be resolved still exists.

So, congratulations to the Girls basketball team and congratulations to our selectmen in moving ahead.
