The signs of Spring are evident on lawns and yards throughout
town. Yes, with the warmest winter in history now leaving our
midst, we look to the longer daylight and birds and the geese
honking their way into our day.
And, among
those signs of Spring are the signs that remind us of the special
election that is scheduled for March 16. Driving around town, we
are reminded that the election is about one simple issue.
Voters will
be asked on the ballot to decide whether to ‘recall’ any or all of
four individual selectmen.
Let’s see
what the outcome of the election might produce for the town.
1.
Should none of the selectmen be recalled, then the status
quo exists as far the board continuing to function as is.
2.
Should one or two individuals be recalled, then the two
remaining would sit with ms. Maguire, constituting a majority and
the board would operate in a limited way.
3.
Should three or four members be recalled, and then the
board of selectmen would not have a necessary quorum to hold
meetings and manage the affairs of the town.
4.
In that situation, the town clerk would petition the state
to allow the combination of the remaining selectman, town clerk,
and other named individuals to sit and carry on the business of
the town.
5.
In any event, at the annual town election in June, voters
will have the opportunity to reconstitute the board, should there
be vacancies.
The election
in March is an important event for all in our town. The debate on
both sides of the recall issue is spirited and intense.
We exhort
everyone to participate in this process of debate, reflection, and
voting.
And,
remember that the polling places have changed.
Voters in
precincts 1 –5 will go to the high school to vote while those in
precincts 6, 7, and 8 will vote at the Fisher School.
Important
issues are facing our town.
