The Week – Nov. 4

The Year – 2002

New Leaders on the Scene

With the elections for 2002 now over, we look to new leadership at the state and local level. We have many new people at the state house with a new governor, state treasurer, and several new representatives on Beacon Hill.

This is indeed a year of change and transition.

Locally, we see not just new people in the state house but a new sense of representation for Walpole in the state house of representatives.

After the redistricting of last year, following the census of 2000, Walpole is now divided up by precincts such that four people now represent parts of Walpole, in addition to representing their own home districts.

Apart from the election results, the board of selectmen will be reorganizing this week to choose a new chair, after the sudden death of chairman John Hill.

Thus, when it all settles down, the town and the state will see new faces and new leadership throughout.

Shopping

After months of construction, the new Super Stop & Shop is about to open, with new features and extended parking.

Alas, at the same time, we are saying good-bye to the wonderful Ashmont store – a neighborhood store from days past.

Change is coming to Walpole in diverse ways – with new governmental leadership and new commercial enterprises.

Next Monday, the town and the state and the country will celebrate the annual Veteran’s Day holiday.

Typically, the memorial service begins at 11:00 am in recognition of the history that the armistice, ending WWI, was signed at 11:00 am on Nov. 11 in 1918.
