We approach a three-day weekend, as the country will celebrate Columbus Day
on Monday, October 14th. But, wait. Isnt October 12th the historical date
at which we should be celebrating the arrival of Christopher Columbus to
this part of the known world?
What is the origin and nature of this holiday now celebrated on the second
Monday of October each year?
1. What happened in 1492?
Searching for new sailing routes to the east, Columbus headed west in his
quest for trading partners. Landing in the Caribbean, he thought he was in
Asia.
2. What is the current controversy around the person Columbus?
Some would say Columbus is a heroic explorer; others suggest he was a trader
dealing in merchandise and people.
3. When did people start marking a celebration New York City (1866), SF
(1869), and Colorado (1905)?
The holiday evolved over many years from a local one to a statewide one to a
national holiday.
4. President Roosevelt declared a national holiday honoring Columbus in
1937.
5. In 1971 congress revised the timing of the holiday to be the second
Monday in October.
6. 510 years later, we continue to celebrate the coming of European settlers
to the Americas.
