The Week – Sept. 9

The Year – 2002

Where were you last year?

The world is recalling the singular events that caught us all by surprise one year ago – on that fateful Tuesday. The question is raised over and over. Indeed, where were you when the news of the attack on the World Trade Center took place?

What was the news here in Walpole?

As horrific as the attack last year was, we in Walpole had a very complicated day for more than one reason. Lets’ recall the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

1.           After the death of congressman Moakley, a primary election was set for Tuesday, Sept. 11 to select candidates for the November election. The board of selectmen also decided to put on the ballot the question of overriding Prop. 2 ˝ in order to seek additional money to balance the budget.

2.           The override passed, Rep. Steven Lynch from South Boston went on to take a seat in Congress, and planes were hijacked from Logan airport and diverted into the WTC.

How has the world changed for you and us?

Yes, traveling by air requires more time and planning. We are more alert to danger signals. But, life in general continues.

And, our political schedule continues. Next week, voters go the polls to vote in the primary election for statewide offices. The final week of campaigning will be heavy.

It is guaranteed that we will have new people at the state level running our state. It is crucial then that we all participate in the selection of the new administration.
