The Campaign Ends;
A New Cycle Begins
Now that the rhetoric
of the campaign is consigned to the archives of history, we look ahead
to the future to assess reality with the promises of the campaign.
What can we
expect?
-
Social policy will be guided more by the actions of various courts
than by presidential edict or legislative action. For example, the
public schools are affected by the rulings of the Supreme Court in
the area of discrimination. To pray or not is an issue decided by
court action.
-
Thus, the nominations made by the president to replace retiring
Supreme Court Justices will have great significance for the future
of our country.
What is in a Name?
-
The issue of naming the Elm Street School after a prominent person
in the town has raised considerable discussion.
-
The question that is most basic would seem to be this. What benefit
to the school and to the children attending the school arises from
providing a name for the school that is associated with a person.
Does the name of a building or institution determine the worth or
value of the building?
-
Then, if naming is a good thing, should we perhaps
consider renaming all school buildings to fit this principle?
